Overview

A Valplast-type flexible partial has no metal framework. The nylon base flexes into undercuts, so it can be used where a rigid frame is contraindicated and where the patient will not accept visible clasps.

Fabrication

The base is injection moulded in flexible nylon and the teeth are set into it. Because the material cannot be relined the way acrylic can, the impression needs to capture the functional sulcus accurately; a border-moulded impression gives a noticeably better result than a stock tray.

Limits

Flexible material is not the right choice for every case. It is harder to repair, cannot easily be added to, and does not transmit load the way a rigid framework does. Where the case needs a stress-bearing design we will say so instead of supplying a flexible prosthesis that will fail.
